The Ark of the Covenant was placed in the second compartment of the Sanctuary or Tabernacle. God communed with the people from the Ark. The High Priest came before the Ark in the presence of the Lord once per year during the Day of Atonement.
When the Priest that carried the ark stepped into the Jordan river on their way to Jericho the waters parted. The ark was carried by the priests when the Israelites walked around Jericho for seven days.
During the time when Eli and his vile sons Hophni and Phinehas where priests the ark was taken by the Philistines. When Israel was being defeated in war by the Philistines Israel decided to get the ark and bring it to the battle ground. Hophni and Phinehas were with the ark. Israel was defeated, Hophni and Phinehas were killed, and the ark was taken by the Philistines.
The Philistines put the ark into a house in Ashdod with their god Dagon. The next morning, they found Dagon face down on the floor. After picking it up, the next morning they found it with its head and palms of its hands cut off.
The ark was then sent to Gath, but after causing great destruction there it was sent to the Philistine city Ekron. The Ekronites sent the ark back to Israel after there was deadly destruction throughout their city. They put the ark on a new cart drawn by two milch kine and sent it away.
The kine took the cart to the field of Joshua in Bethshemesh. It was kept in the house of Abinadab for twenty years. It stayed there until King David decided to bring it to the city of David.
In the Old Testament the ark is last mentioned in the book of Jeremiah where it was prophesied that they would no longer visit it. Scholars believe that it was hidden before the Chaldees under king Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem and destroyed the city and burnt the house of God the sanctuary, taking people, including Daniel as captives to Babylon.
